Atccno: 15823 COMM: Strain 273/53 was deposited and accessioned at the ATCC on 3 different occasions as ATCC 15823, ATCC 19723 and ATCC 23613. A discrepancy among the laboratory characteristics of each culture was noted; G. Gauze examined each ATCC preparation and selected ATCC 15823 as the one which agreed most closely with the original description of Actinomyces albovinaceus; i.E., only 15823 still produces a red-brown, soluble pigment. On that basis ATCC 19723, listed in Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol. 18: 69-189, 1968 as ISP 5136, and ATCC 23613 were discarded.
